WALKING YOUR DOG ON HENGISTBURY HEAD

Hengistbury Head is a great place to walk your dog but it is important to remember that the Head is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, an Ancient Monument and a Nature Reserve too. As you will have read elsewhere, it is an extremely important site for an enormous range of flora and fauna.

So, it's not like walking in the local park - you will need to keep your dog under close control. It is very easy to disturb birds such as skylarks, which live and nest, perfectly concealed, on the ground. Or you may find the Galloway Cattle within one of the fenced enclosures or areas closed to the public to allow the flora to regenerate. Also, it may be tempting to allow your dog into one of the ponds or lakes, but it is very important that you do not because of the disturbance to fragile wildlife. Common sense will tell you that all of these areas need to be protected from disturbance by dogs and people too. Please always clear up after your dog and pop it in one of the many bins around the Head. Click here to see the map for the location of bins

Those inconsiderate visitors who do not clear up after their dogs are seriously damaging the fragile environment with the toxic nature of the dog mess. In addition it is also very unpleasant for other visitors to the Head. The Rangers and the police are strictly enforcing all Dog Control bye-laws on Hengistbury Head so please do clear up after your dog, and all adhere to the bye-laws which show where dogs are required on leads or prohibited all together. Dog walkers are very welcome on the Head which is the perfect place to enjoy a good walk with your canine friend but please remember:

Don't let him disturb the wildlife
Please clear up after him and dispose of it in one of the bins!
Obey the bye-laws on where dogs must be on leads or are prohibited to enter
