THE
NEW STONE AGE (Neolithic)
5500-3700 Year Ago
The
large collection of flint implements makes Hengistbury one of
the most important Neolithic sites in southern Britain. The tools
included scrapers, knives and borers, arrowheads and polished
axes; and, for the first time, pottery was manufactured on a large
scale.
These
settlers cleared vegetation to prepare the ground for cultivation.
Primitive species of wheat and barley were grown and pigs, sheep
and cattle were herded. This was the beginning of agriculture
in Britain.
A
different lifestyle developed because people no longer travelled
long distances in search of food.
