THE
EARLY IRON AGE SETTLEMENT 2800-2600 Years Ago
The
availability of iron ore (in the headland) must have attracted
settlers from the continent who had the knowledge, skills and
equipment to extract the iron. The metal was fashioned into farm
implements, nails, knives, swords and spears.
The
people lived in timber-framed round houses with thatched roofs
and mud-daubed walls. Iron was smelted in clay hearths and ingots
and implements were probably traded for pottery, farm produce
and wood with settlers on the river Avon and Stour.
