CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT

There can be few headlands along Britain’s south coast more interesting than Hengistbury Head. Its importance has been well documented and in this respect it has a range of international, national and local designations. The Site of Special Scientific Interest and Scheduled Ancient Monument designations confer a statutory responsibility on Bournemouth Borough Council to protect and enhance this special place for future generations to enjoy. There are problems and conflicts, much as one would expect on a coastal site with severe erosion and up to one million visitors annually. The consequences are a reduction in the quality of the environment, disturbance to wildlife through unchecked trampling and erosion of landscape and prehistoric features.

Management Plan - The council has developed a management plan (last reviewed in 2005). It sets out a programme of projects for the following five years and includes aims for, education, recreation, conservation of the wildlife, geology and archaeology and coast protection. The careful management required to safeguard Hengistbury Head for the future also depends upon the co-operation of the local community and visitors. In this respect there several organisations working closely with the council including the Hengistbury Head Supporters Group and the Christchurch Harbour Ornithological Group.

Countryside Staff (The Rangers) - There are two full time Countryside Officers (Rangers) responsible for the nature reserve. They are supported by other officers including an estate worker who has special responsibility for the welfare of the livestock which graze the reserve.

Key Projects for the next 5 years

Visitor Centre: development of the thatched barn as a resource for visitors
Invasive plants: eradication of Gaultheria, Rhododendron, Bracken
Grazing: improve and enhance the grasslands / saltmarsh
Interpretation: Improve the on-site information panels
Research: monitor the reserve to build up our knowledge in order to help make decisions in the future.
